Batman V Superman continued its dominance atop the box office with an estimated $51.33 million. As I mentioned last week, it's a mystery how well the film will continue to do in the coming weeks, especially with its poor reception. While a $51.33 million dollar weekend would be viewed as a success for many studios (especially after a $166 million dollar weekend), this movie cost $250 million dollars to make. The expectation was that this movie would easily make a billion dollars and set up the future D.C. Comics movieverse (à la Marvel Studios). Thus the movie is still shaping up to be a success, but has the stink of a disappointment in terms of box office receipts, critical reception, and its own potential movieverse. Warner Bros executives are no doubt scrambling to figure out what went wrong so they don't end up like Sony with Spider-Man or Fox with the Fantastic Four.
Zootopia continued to perform well finishing behind Dawn in the #2 slot with an estimated $19.32 million. The House of Mouse's newest animated feature has earned over $787 million dollars worldwide. The other old hat, Deadpool, managed to hang around in the top ten at #10 with an estimated $3.45 million. Deadpool has become the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time, with a worldwide gross of $754 million. The Divergent Series: Allegiant continued being a box office disappointment at #6 with an estimated $5.76 million. Forget The Hunger Games, at this rate Allegiant won't even come close to matching the previous installment in the franchise, Insurgent, and its worldwide cume of just under $300 million.
New comers did not fare as well as those box office titans. Coming in at #4 was the Christian faith film, God's Not Dead 2 with $7.62 million. Not Dead barely edged out the other older Christian film, Miracles From Heaven which garnered a respectable $7.25 million in its 3rd week at the box office. The original God's Not Dead managed to make over $60 million against a $2 million dollar budget, and it doesn't look like its sequel will come close to matching that. The other newcomer to the top ten was the Mike Epps vehicle Meet the Blacks which finished in the bottom of the top ten with an estimated $4.05 million.
