Wind River (2017) Movie Review

November 6, 2017 Steve Baqqi

Taylor Sheridan is on a roll. Fresh from writing back-to-back stellar films, Sicario and Hell or High Water, Sheridan gives us another gem with Wind River. Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen respectively star in Wind River as a U.S. Fish and Wildlife tracker and an FBI agent. They are tasked with tracking a murderer in this meditative thriller set on the frozen landscape of Wyoming.

The Infiltrator (2016) Movie Review

September 7, 2016 Steve Baqqi

Is there anything Bryan Cranston can’t do? I mean seriously, after appearing as everyone’s favorite meth kingpin, he’s been given a blank check to do whatever he wants. He’s generally starred in terrible dreck the past couple of years like Red Tails, John Carter, Rock of Ages, Total Recall, Godzilla, and Madagascar 3 but everyone gave these a pass; because come on! He is the one who knocks! Besides, he paid his dues for years with Malcolm in the Middle, and all it takes is just one Trumbo to remind us who we’re dealing with. Having said all that Cranston is one of the few good things about The Infiltrator, a boring, clichéd, undercover drug drama.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) Movie Review

April 4, 2016 Steve Baqqi

10 Cloverfield Lane has been on my list of films to see for some time now, but I had not gotten the chance due to something else always getting in the way.  I was also concerned about whether I would be ill informed, not having seen the original. I can confidently say that viewership of the original Cloverfield is not necessary. I was expecting another found footage type spectacle (akin to the original film), but instead I got a tense, atmospheric, and deeply engaging thriller that’s as disturbing as it is entertaining.

Sicario (2015) Movie Review

November 5, 2015 Steve Baqqi

I assumed Sicario would be a gritty drug-enforcement-take-down action flick, a classic good vs bad with one of the best action movie heroine’s (Emily Blunt) in the starring role. I was wrong. While there is loud gritty violence, the movie is also a taut, tense thriller, and so much more than just popcorn cinema. It’s a thoughtful, albeit bleak look at the escalating war on the Mexican Drug Cartels.
