Suicide Squad managed to threepeat atop the box office with an estimated $20.86 million.

Suicide Squad managed to threepeat atop the box office with an estimated $20.86 million.

...And we're back. Sorry for the layoff. Suicide Squad managed to hold off all challengers with an estimated $20.86 million. Despite terrible reviews the film has managed to earn $575 million worldwide.

The newcomers all fared poorly. The best of this lame bunch was War Dogs, which managed to accrue $14.69 million, good enough for third place. Kubo and the Two Strings claimed the fourth spot with an estimated $12.61 million. Lastly the completely vile and unnecessary remake, Ben-Hur (2016), limped into sixth place with an estimated $11.2 million.

Top Ten:

  1. Suicide Squad                                                                                                    $20.86 Million

Box Office Results: July 22-24, 2016

Star Trek Beyond disintegrated the competition for the #1 spot with an estimated $59.25 Million.

Star Trek Beyond disintegrated the competition for the #1 spot with an estimated $59.25 Million.

Star Trek Beyond managed to go above and beyond the competition, finishing the weekend with an estimated $59.25 million. It remains to be seen how well the film will continue to perform going forward with stiff competition on the horizon, and against a massive budget of $185 million. On the other side of the coin, Ice Age: Collision Course crashed like...like well...an asteroid. Debuting at #4 with an estimated $21.37 million, behind Star Trek, The Secret Life of Pets, and the low budget horror film Lights Out, this is pretty terrible news for Fox and Blue Sky Studios. The film has somehow made $200 million worldwide due to strong foreign box office receipts, but I doubt it will make it to $300 million. Against a budget of $105 million, this will almost assuredly be viewed as a box office disappointment.

Looking at the successful animated films, The Secret Life of Pets managed to finish in the #2 spot with an estimated $29.61 million. The film has made a total of $325 million worldwide and will likely eclipse $400 million after next weekend. Finding Dory also continues to have strong legs despite being in its sixth week at the box office. Dory once again finished in the top ten at #6 with an estimated $7.23 million. Dory has now made $782 million worldwide and is the fifth highest grossing film of the year.

The horror film Lights Out opened with an estimated $21.69 million, good enough for 3rd place. Against a paltry budget of $4.9 million, the film is already a success for Warner Bros. Even Dinesh D'Souza's conservative fever dream Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party managed to crack the top ten at #9 with an estimated $3.96 million.

Top Ten:

  1. Star Trek Beyond                                                                                                $59.25 Million

  4. Ice Age: Collision Course                                                                  $21.37 Million
  5. Ghostbusters (2016)                                                                                                 $21 Million
  6. Finding Dory                                                                                                           $7.23 Million

The Secret Life of Pets feasted on the box office for a second week in a row with an estimated $50.83 Million.

The Secret Life of Pets feasted on the box office for a second week in a row with an estimated $50.83 Million.

The Secret Life of Pets managed to reclaim the #1 spot atop the box office with an estimated $50.84 million. This was despite still competition from the  Ghostbusters (2016) remake which finished second with an estimated $46.02 million. Next weekend features three popular wide releases, so its a mystery as to how well Ghostbusters (2016) will continue to perform.

Finding Dory managed to continue its sustained success finishing at #4 with an estimated $11.44 million. The House of Mouse is undoubtedly pleased now that Dory is the highest grossing animated film of all time in the United States ($445 million).  Dory's total international cume sits at $722 million and it still has a shot at making it into the top four highest grossing films of 2016.

The Infiltrator was the only other newcomer to crack the top ten. Walter White's decent into Pablo Escobar's empire made a paltry $5.3 million. The film was beaten by six other older films, including two that have been out for five weeks already (Finding Dory, Central Intelligence). With stiff competition coming next weekend The Infiltrator will likely fall off the face of the Earth.

Finding Dory three-peats at #1 with an estimated $41.8 million.

Finding Dory three-peats at #1 with an estimated $41.8 million.

Finding Dory claimed the #1 spot with an estimated $41.81 million at the box office for the weekend. Dory managed to hold its place atop the box office despite stiff competition from newcomers. Pixar and The House of Mouse are undoubtedly pleased by Dory's performance, which already has a worldwide cume of $555 million, the same cannot be said of The BFG. Disney and Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic barely claimed the #4 spot with a meager $18.77 million dollars in its first weekend. With a production budget of $140 million, The BFG will be lucky to earn even half of that back, and will be one of the few misfires from the strong Disney brand this year.

The other two newcomers to the top ten performed admirably in the face of Pixar's might. The Legend of Tarzan claimed the #2 spot with an estimated $38.52 million, while the horror/action three-quel The Purge: Election Year, finished with an estimated $31.51 million. The Purge has already tripled its production budget of $10 million in its first weekend alone, all but guaranteeing more sequels for the franchise. The Legend of Tarzan, much like The BFG, will probably struggle to earn back its bloated $180 million dollar budget, but it has a slightly better head start.
