Weekend Box Office Results: June 24-26, 2016

June 27, 2016 Steve Baqqi
Finding Dory washed away any doubts at a repeat #1 spot with an estimated $72.95 Million.

Finding Dory washed away any doubts at a repeat #1 spot with an estimated $72.95 Million.

Finding Dory continued its massive success with $72.95 million for the top spot at the box office in what continues to be banner year for The House of Mouse. The film takes its second week atop the box office despite three high profile newcomers. Dory has already made just under $400 million worldwide and will continue adding to that total in the coming weeks. With Finding Dory, Disney has four movies in the top ten worldwide box office gross for 2016, including the top three (Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia, and The Jungle Book).

The other newcomers didn't do so terribly, especially when considering the tough competition. Coming in at the #2 spot was Independence Day: Resurgence with an estimated $41.03 million. Ryan Reynolds' better half managed to swim her way to the #4 spot with an estimated $16.8 million in The Shallows, while The Free State of Jones fought its way to the #6 spot with a dismal $7.57 million (And that's despite starring everyone's favorite handsome stoner. Could this be the end of the Mcconaissance? I hope not).

  1. Finding Dory                                                                                                        $72.95 Million

Weekend Box Office Results: June 3-5, 2016

June 7, 2016 Steve Baqqi
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows somehow took #1 at the box office with $35.31 Million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows somehow took #1 at the box office with $35.31 Million.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of Shadows managed to claim the top spot at the box office, despite looking absolutely horrid, with an estimated $35.31 million. With stiff competition coming from other summer blockbusters, and an already crowded field, expect TMNT 2 to fall precipitously going forward. The other two newcomers didn't fair as well, but also didn't have as massive a budget ($135 million) as TMNT. Me Before You managed $18.72 million in its first week, good enough for the #3 slot, while The Lonely Island vehicle Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping came in at #8 with a paltry $4.69 million

Even as Alice Through The Looking Glass has massively disappointed (finishing in at #4 with $11.31 million), The House of Mouse is still dominating 2016. Though no longer in the Top 10 Disney's Zootopia crossed the billion dollar mark worldwide while The Jungle Book (2016) finished the week at #9 with an estimated $4.44 million dollars and almost $900 million worldwide. The cherry on top is of course Captain America: Civil War, which finished at #6 with an estimated $7.82 million in its fourth weekend at the box office. Already the highest grossing movie of the year, Civil War will look to continue to add to its $1.13 billion dollar worldwide gross.

Top Ten:

  1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows                       $35.31 Million
  2. X-Men: Apocalypse                                                                      $22.82 Million
  3. Me Before You                                                                              $18.72 Million
  4. Alice Through the Looking Glass                                                     $11.31 Million
  5. The Angry Birds Movie                                                                  $10.21 Million
  6. Captain America: Civil War                                                             $7.82 Million
  7. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising                                                           $4.86 Million
  8. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping                                                $4.69 Million
  9. The Jungle Book (2016)                                                                  $4.44 Million
  10. The Nice Guys                                                                                 $3.45 Million

The Angry Birds Movie managed to take down box office king, Captain America: Civil War (for one week anyway), for the top spot with an estimated $38.15 million in its first weekend. Civil War for its part has already made over $1 billion dollars worldwide and will likely continue building on its fantastic cume in the weeks to come despite competition from Fox's X-Men: Apocalypse.
